教員紹介：ピアース ダニエル ロイ 講師

本年度四月より教育学部教育学科・中学校英語／英語小学校コースの講師として着任しました、ピアース ダニエル ロイです。もともとはニュージーランド出身ですが、約15年前に来日した時、高等学校の外国語指導助手（ＡＬＴ）として山形県の庄内地方にある酒田市に派遣されて大変お世話になったことで、酒田市も心のもう一つの故郷になっています。毎年お盆やお正月に「帰省」するくらいです。酒田にいた5年間の間に、学校について沢山学びながら、必死に日本語を勉強し、ちょうど2011年のラグビーワールドカップの決勝戦の日に、漢字検定準一級の受験に挑戦しました。結果として、ニュージーランドがワールドカップに優勝し、私も無事準一級を突破できました。来日してまだ若かった私が学校の先生と生徒とともに色々学び、共に成長し、酒田を離れる日が来たら、「ニュージーランド人のダニエル」に「日本人のダニエル」もできつつありました(笑)。
その後、日本の英語教育に貢献したく、京都大学の人間環境学研究科・外国語教育講座に無事入学でき、ALTと英語科教諭の授業内の相互作用がテーマでした修士論文の研究を進めながら、英語科の教職員専修免許を取得しました。本来は学校現場に戻ることをずっと考えてた私が、修士号を取得した時点、「自分がわからないことがまだ多すぎる」と実感していて、博士課程に進学しました。今度は博士課程にて研究を深めながら、複言語教育という新しいテーマを見つけ、京都ノートルダム女子大学で英語嘱託講師として勤めながら、色んな学校教諭と連携をとり、教材開発などに向けたアクションリサーチに取り組むようになりました。ただ英語を学ぶだけではなく、英語と日本語を含めて、多言語を学校教育に取り入れる活動により、言語を習得しながら、言語について学ぶ教育法について色々考えるようになりました。
ちょうど2021年度に博士論文をまとめながら、「この経験をいつか教員養成に活かしたいな」と思っていたのですが、まさか早くも四天王寺大学の教育学科に着任することになると予想していませんでした。着任したばかりで、まだわからないことがたくさんありますが、みなさんと一緒に勉強し、考え、今後の日本の外国語教育をより充実させていただきたいと思います。みなさんと一緒に考え、悩み、いろいろ経験することを楽しみにしております。
Hello there! I am Daniel Pearce, and I have just joined the JHS English/English Elementary Course at the Faculty of Education in April this year. I am originally from New Zealand, but when I came to Japan about 15 years ago, I was sent to Sakata City in the Shonai region of Yamagata Prefecture as an assistant language teacher (ALT) at a senior high school, where I was very well looked after – so much so that I now consider Sakata City as another hometown. I even go back ‘home’ every year during the Obon and New Year holidays. During my five years in Sakata, I learnt a lot about Japanese schools and studied Japanese hard. In 2011, on the day of the 2011 Rugby World Cup final, I took the Kanji Proficiency Test Level Pre-1. At the end of that day, New Zealand won the World Cup and I successfully passed the Level Pre-1 test! I was still very young when I first came to Japan, but I learnt a lot with the teachers and students at the school, and we grew together, and when the day came for me to leave Sakata, in addition to the ‘New Zealander Daniel’ was also now the ‘Japanese Daniel.’
After that, I wanted to contribute to English education in Japan, so I was able to successfully enrol in Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies, Foreign Language Education Department, where I obtained a teacher’s licence for the English subject while doing research for my master’s thesis, the theme of which was the interaction between ALTs and English language teachers in the classroom. I had always thought about returning to teach at high schools, but when I completed my master’s degree, I felt there was still so much more to learn, so I entered the PhD programme. While deepening my research in the doctoral programme, I found a new theme of plurilingual education, and while working as a contracted English lecturer at Kyoto Notre Dame Women’s University, I began to collaborate with various school teachers and to engage in action research for the development of teaching materials. I began to think about different pedagogies for learning languages – not just learning English, but also learning about languages through experiences of multiple languages, including English and Japanese.
Just as I was putting together my doctoral thesis in 2021, I was thinking that one day I would like to utilise this experience in teacher training – little did I know I would be appointed to the Department of Education at Shitennoji University in the following year! I have just arrived at my new position and there are still many things I have not gotten used to, but I am looking forward to studying and thinking together with you all, and I hope that we can further enhance foreign language education in Japan in the future.
